Tenerife International Viola Making Competition 2027 & Exhibition
Four halls, different perspectives and an international gathering to discover contemporary viola making.
The Tenerife International Viola Making Competition 2027 will take place as part of the 51st International Viola Congress, to be held in Tenerife from 20 to 24 September 2027. This new initiative will bring together makers, performers and audiences to explore the quality of the instruments and their musical possibilities.
The competition rounds will take place in four halls, following an organised sequence that will allow the qualities of the violas to be appreciated in different acoustic settings. The assessment will bring together craftsmanship, tonal response and the playing experience, using shared criteria and conditions for all instruments participating in each round.
The assessment will involve a Luthiers Panel—featuring Elisa Scrollavezza, Andreas Post, and Christophe Landon—responsible for evaluating the craftsmanship of the violas. Additionally, a Playing Panel will comprise Naoko Shimizu, Principal Viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and Timothy Ridout, a distinguished international soloist.
For makers, this will be a unique opportunity to present their violas to a specialist international community and hear their instruments played by leading performers in the rounds to which they advance. For violists and audiences, it will be an exceptional occasion to discover and compare contemporary instruments, meet their makers and take part in their assessment in accordance with the competition rules.
The exhibition will complement this experience by providing a space for direct contact between professionals, students and potential buyers, encouraging exchange, visibility and new connections within the viola community.
